Rice’s Free-Kick Double Shock
Arsenal handed out a masterclass performance against Real Madrid to take the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final 3-0 at the Emirates. Declan Rice starred by scoring his first two free-kicks in his career in dazzling fashion to leave the 15-time winners in Europe reeling. Mikel Merino put in the third to secure a stranglehold on the tie and give supporters hope of the semi-finals since 2009.
The first curved around the wall and the second shot into the top corner past Thibaut Courtois—a feat almost impossible to stop. The shots had only 3.7% and 6.3% expected goal stats respectively and went against the odds to spark discussions on the dying art of the free-kick, with modern tactics and defensive walls still minimizing instances of this sort of magic in the modern game.
Although the more experienced side, Real Madrid were outplayed in almost all aspects. Their defense could not match the intensity of Arsenal and were made to suffer an added handicap when Eduardo Camavinga was given his marching orders in stoppage time.
Mendes Seals Late PSG Surge
Paris Saint-Germain ensured a 3-1 victory against Aston Villa in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final with an added-time strike by Nuno Mendes to complete an unstoppable attacking display. Villa struck the first blow with an unexpected lead by Morgan Rogers, to which PSG reacted by scoring by Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia before Mendes struck late into stoppage to give the French champions an important advantage going into the return match.
Even with Villa’s initial promise and strong defense, they were eventually overwhelmed by an attack-minded PSG team with plenty of youthful zip. PSG’s transition under Luis Enrique away from superstar-style play and toward more team-oriented and well-rounded play apparently has worked out well so far.
Raphinha Equals Messi Mark
Barcelona played with authority to beat Borussia Dortmund 4-0 in the Champions League quarter-final first leg, with Raphinha taking centre stage by equalling Lionel Messi’s record of 19 involvements in a single Champions League season. Raphinha opened the scoring and assisted two more goals to go with Robert Lewandowski’s two and Lamine Yamal’s fourth to leave Dortmund with an almost impossible task in the second leg.
Much against some early promise by Dortmund, particularly on the first half, however, were surpassed by a incessant Catalan attack that repeatedly ruled through their backline.
