22/02: Daily Predictions: Roma vs Feyenoord

Betting Tips

Roma will welcome Feyenoord to the Stadio Olimpico on Thursday for the second leg of the UEFA Europa League knockout round playoffs. Last week, they met in Rotterdam for the first leg, which ended 1-1.

Romelu Lukaku equalized for the Serie A team after Igor Paixão gave Feyenoord the lead in the first half. These two have faced off six times in this competition over the years. Roma has had the most success, with six wins, while Feyenoord has one win and two draws.

Roma vs Feyenoord

Roma are still on track to make their second consecutive Europa League final after being defeated on penalties by Sevilla last season. I Giallorossi parted ways with Jose Mourinho last month, bringing in former player Daniele De Rossi to help improve their terrible run of results since the turn of the year.

The new manager has won four, drawn one, and lost one of his first six games in charge, and comes into this game off a 3-0 victory over Frosinone the previous weekend. Roma fell behind in stoppage time in the first leg, but Romelu Lukaku scored in the 67th minute to tie the game.

Meanwhile, Feyenoord will feel they have a score to settle tonight, given this is the same opponent who knocked them out of the competition in the quarterfinals last season. Feyenoord won the first leg 1-0, but Roma won the second 2-1, forcing extra time, when they scored two more goals to win 4-2 on aggregate. Last week, Feyenoord had the most attacking chances, with 18 shots and six on target. They may be unhappy that they did not get more out of the match, as they generated a couple of excellent opportunities in the closing minutes.

Nonetheless, they are well-positioned in this clash and enter the encounter in good form, having won four of their past five matches in all competitions and remaining unbeaten in their last 11.

Verdict

Feyenoord has scored in 12 of their 13 competitive away games this season, while Roma has only had one clean sheet in their previous 12 matches in all competitions, so betting on both teams to score might produce some big rewards here.

While Feyenoord have been impressive this season, their record in away matches in European competition is far from inspiring. They lost all three matches on the road in the Champions League and have not tasted victory in continental competitions in over four seasons. Roma, on the other hand, have been excellent on their home patch and are yet to concede a goal at Stadio Olimpico in this competition.

In the end, I expect Roma to win because of their home advantage. They’ve won 12 of their previous 15 home games, with their only defeat coming against Serie A leaders Inter Milan. Given the home advantage for last season’s runner-up and the visitors’ dismal away record in the competition, the hosts are anticipated to win by a close margin.
