Germany’s two most successful teams went head to head when Bayern Munich welcomed Borussia Dortmund to the Allianz Stadium. The home side knew that a victory would give them an eight point lead over Leverkusen after the champions drew with Union Berlin earlier in the day. Both sides went all out attacking in the first half with Dortmund looking to repeat last season’s performance when they won this fixture 2-0.It was surprising that the teams went into the break scoreless as plenty of opportunities were created but not finished.
The second half was a totally different story, things really got going with Dortmund snatching a surprise lead through Maximilian Beier. The goal sparked Bayern into life with substitute Serge Gnabry playing a crucial role in both goals. It was his driving run into the box that led to Raphaël Guerreiro sweeping home after a clever lay-off from Thomas Müller. Moments later, Gnabry took matters into his own hands, surging forward and coolly finishing into the far corner. Any thoughts that the home side had of securing the three points were dashed in the 75th minute when Waldemar Anton equalised for the visitors. Despite a frantic last 15 minutes, neither side could find the winner as they had to settle for a point each.
Leverkusen’s winning run comes to an end
Three wins in their last three league matches saw Bayer Leverkusen keep the pressure on Bayern Munich although they still hold a six point lead. There was an opportunity for the champions to close the gap to three points as they had an earlier kickoff against Union Berlin. Leverkusen dominated the first half, almost scoring inside the first minute with Jeremie Frimpong making some space for himself in the box before shooting just wide. The hosts suffered a scare when Andrej Ilić had the ball in the net for Union but his strike was disallowed for offside, much to the relief of the home crowd. This should have served as a wake call for the hosts but they continued their lacklustre display. They have become famous for late winners but there was no fairytale ending in this match as they had to settle for a share of the points.
Leipzig leap into fourth spot
RB Leipzig won their second straight match to move into the top four with 48 points. It was a massive win for the Red Bull side as they are now two points clear of fifth placed Mainz who failed to win for the fourth straight match. Eintracht Frankfurt got back to winning ways when they beat Heidenheim 3-0. The result moved them into third spot on 51 points, three ahead of Leipzig. Borussia Dortmund had a mountain to climb if they were to make it into the European spots as they faced league leaders Bayern. They gave an excellent account of themselves as they came away with a very creditable 2-2 draw. Dortmund are now just three points away from European qualification
St Pauli the big winner in relegation battle
St.Pauli was the big winner in the relegation battle as they were the only one of the bottom four to secure a win. Their 2-1 victory over fellow strugglers Holstein Kiel saw them move seven points clear of the relegation zone. The other two clubs in the drop zone, Bochum and Heidenheim also lost to all but confirmed the two relegated teams will come from the current bottom three. The three bottom team’s best chance of survival is to make the relegation/promotion match at the end of the season if they finish in 16th spot. Heidenheim currently occupy this spot but are just two points clear of Bochum, who lost for the fourth straight match.

Race for the Golden Boot
Harry Kane continues to lead the Golden Boot race despite not getting on the scoresheet in the last match. His nearest challenger,Patrik Schick remains six goals behind as he also failed to find the back of the net. Amazingly Omar Marmoush remains in third spot, 3 months after departing to Manchester City. The Golden Boot looks set to be retained by Kane unless something drastic happens in the last five games.
