Leaders Bayern Munich failed to win in consecutive league matches for the first time this season when they were held to a 1-1 draw away to Union Berlin. The home side were in good form after beating Eintracht Frankfurt in their last match but still decided they were happy to absorb the attacking pressure from Bayern. The tactic seemed to be working well as the Bavarians only had one shot on goal in the first 20 minutes. Things did not improve much for them as they struggled to create any meaningful attacks and were forced into shooting from distance which saw the teams go into halftime scoreless.
Vincent Kompany would have had stern words at the break as Bayern looked rejuvenated. Their new found energy brought them joy when Leroy Sane put them into the lead in the 75th minute. The smart money was on Bayern to claim the three points at that stage but Union had other ideas. The goal seemed to refresh the home side as they attacked relentlessly and were rewarded just ten minutes later when Benedict Hollerbach equalised for the hosts. Bayern went looking for the winner but were forced to settle for the draw and a share of the points.
Leverkusen close gap to six points
Just when we thought the league was all but over, the draw by Bayern has re-ignited the title race. Bayer Leverkusen took full advantage of Bayern’s slip as they beat Stuttgart 4-3 in a seven goal thriller to reduce the gap to the top to just six points. The champions started the match nine points behind Bayern and knew a win would take them to within six. Stuttgart started the match on fire and took the lead in the 15th minute. It looked like the champions were heading to their second loss in four days after going down to Bayern midweek in the Champions League. The home side doubled their lead just after the break to leave Leverkusen on the brink of defeat. Xavi Alonso ‘s side showed great fighting qualities to pull a goal back before the hosts added a third but that was not enough as the visitors scored two to bring the score to 3-3. The hosts were cruelly denied a point when they conceded an own goal to hand Leverkusen the win. The win takes them to within six points of leaders Bayern.
Eintracht Frankfurt back to winning ways
Eintracht Frankfurt got their quest for a Champions League spot back on track when they won 3-1 away to relegation-threatened Bochum. The win broke a sequence of three straight defeats and elevated them to equal on points as third placed Mainz who were held to a draw in their match against Freiburg. Mainz will be kicking themselves for not making five wins in a row. Playing at home, all was going according to plan especially when they took the lead in the 34th minute. The match then changed on its head when Dominik Kohr was shown a straight red card for the hosts. Freiburg made the one man advantage count and scored in the second half although Mainz again took the lead in the 74th minute. The seesaw battle continued when the visitors brought the match to 2-2 just five minutes later which is how it finally ended.
Heidenheim the big winner in relegation fight
Heidenheim was the big winner in the relegation battle as they saw off bottom placed Holstein Kiel. In a straight shootout between the two bottom placed teams, Heidenheim cam out the blocks faster and took the lead in the 33 minute and never looked back after doubling their advantage, two minutes after the halftime break. Bochum were brought back to earth after beating Bayern last week as they went down 3-1 to a rejuvenated Eintracht Frankfurt. Despite the loss they still remain in the relegation/promotion playoff spot.

Harry Kane continues to lead the race for the Golden Boot despite going through his leanest scoring patch since joining the Bundesliga. Patrik Schick continues his amazing season as he scored his 17th league goal of the campaign to close within goals of Kane. The departed Omar Marmoush still retains third spot which shows what a great season he was having before going to Manchester City.
