La Liga 2024/25

Spanish LaLiga Season 2024/25

Week 30 Review

Fans of the Spanish top flight were treated to a week of pure entertainment thanks to the twists that were created by the outcome of some matches.

The top two teams both dropped points while the race for the European places got even tougher for the teams involved. The big shocker was Jose Bordalas’ team, Getafe, known for their brutish defending, scoring the most goals in the weekend. Given their opponents were the relegation-bound Real Valladolid, it still surprised everyone that they were able to muster the kind of attacking performance they did.

Let us now take a look at other actions from week 30.

Valencia secures safety from relegation as league title race takes another turn

The biggest story of the weekend was Valencia’s 2 – 1 win over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

That victory could be the difference between Los Blancos retaining their championship and losing it. If they lose it, this would be the third time in the last 10 years that Valencia have directly scuppered Real Madrid’s chances of winning LaLiga, the other two being 13/14 and 14/15. This would also be the first time that Valencia have won away at Real Madrid since 2008, and their first away win in almost a year.

The difference between the Carlos Corberan version of Valencia and the Ruben Baraja version is staggering, and fans cannot help but wonder how their season would have gone if Corberan had started as their manager. Now that they are safe from relegation, they will have the opportunity to see what Los Che under Corberan can do in the 2025/26 season.

Meanwhile, that loss was Barcelona and Atletico de Madrid’s chance to make headway in the title race. Real Betis, the second most in-form team in LaLiga in 2025, handed Barcelona their first draw of the year in all competitions. It was a good run for the Catalan giants, but many cannot help but wonder if this is the beginning of another struggle–the kind that cost them in November/December.

While Barcelona struggled to dismantle Betis at the Olympic Stadium in Montjuic, Atletico were doing damage to Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. It was a tough match, but in the end, Atletico are now closer to Real Madrid, who still have to face Barcelona down the line.

The title race is surely going down to the wire, and the fans are excited for what is to come.
